The system kicks on, and for the first thirty seconds the house smells like a damp basement or a gym bag left in a car. Then it fades. When an AC smells musty like that, you are not imagining it, and an air freshener is not going to solve it.
Musty is a biological smell. Something organic is growing somewhere wet inside your system, and the blower is delivering the odor to every room. The good news is that the list of places it can be growing is short, and each one has a real fix.
What musty actually is
Cooling and dehumidifying are the same process. Warm humid air hits a cold evaporator coil, water condenses on the fins, and that water drips into a pan and out a drain line. A working system pulls gallons of water out of the air on a humid August day in Gwinnett County.
All that moisture is the point, and it is also the problem. Any surface in the air path that stays damp, and that has dust and organic material on it, becomes a place where mold and bacteria can establish. The odor you smell is their metabolic byproducts, not the organisms themselves.
Dirty sock syndrome
The industry nickname for this is dirty sock syndrome, and it describes a specific pattern: a sour, mildewy odor that appears most strongly when the system switches modes or starts up after sitting, then diminishes during a long run.
Heat pumps are especially prone, because a coil that alternates between cooling and heating gives biofilm a warm damp cycle and then bakes the odor loose. If you have a heat pump and notice it worst in shoulder weather, that is the mechanism.
The four places the smell lives
Biofilm on the evaporator coil
The most common source. The coil is permanently damp in cooling season and it is the first thing return air hits, so dust and pollen land there. Metro Atlanta spring pollen builds that layer fast, and dust plus moisture makes a slimy film in the fin pack.
Standing water in the drain pan
A pan should be empty within minutes of shutdown. When the drain partly clogs with the same biofilm, or the pan is not level, water sits, and the air passing just above it picks up the odor. A pan that has rusted through and soaked the insulation below produces the same smell from a spot nobody looks at.
Damp duct liner and wet insulation
Fiberglass duct board and internal liner absorb moisture and do not dry easily in a humid climate. It happens after a condensate overflow, a roof leak above an attic duct run, or poorly insulated duct sweating in an unconditioned attic. Wet fibrous material with dust in it is why some smells persist after a coil is spotless.
Crawlspace and attic air pulled through return leaks
Return ducts run at negative pressure, so every seam gap and unsealed boot pulls air from wherever the duct sits. If that is a red-clay crawlspace or a hot attic, the system is drawing musty air in and distributing it. The coil can be clean and the smell still real, and plenty of homes here have return leakage doing exactly that.
Cleaning it out versus masking it
Masking fails, and it fails predictably. Scented filters, vent clips, and duct sprays cover the odor for days while the source keeps growing. Some aerosol products also leave residue on the coil that traps more dust.
The actual sequence is find it, clean it, dry it, then keep it dry:
- Coil cleaning. A proper cleaning gets the panel off and the fin pack cleaned through with a cleaner made for coils, with the pan protected and rinsing done correctly.
- Pan and drain. Clear the line, flush the trap, verify slope and that the pan drains fully, and confirm the float switch works.
- Replace what cannot be cleaned. Saturated duct liner and wet insulation get removed, not deodorized.
- Seal the return side. Sealing return seams and boots stops crawlspace and attic air from being pulled in.
- Then control humidity, which is what keeps it from coming back.

What UV lights and filtration really do
Both help, within limits, and both get oversold.
A UV lamp aimed at the coil and pan can suppress growth on the surfaces it actually illuminates, which genuinely helps a coil that keeps re-fouling. It does not sterilize air moving past at duct velocity, treat the inside of your ducts, or clean a coil that is already caked. UV is maintenance for a clean coil, not a substitute for cleaning a dirty one.
Better filtration keeps dust and pollen off the coil, which removes the food source. The catch is duct capacity: a dense filter in a return that was never sized for it raises static pressure, reduces airflow, and can push the coil toward freezing. Filter grade and return size have to be chosen together.
Humidity control is the real fix
Nothing grows on a surface that dries out. That is the whole game, and in North Georgia it is harder than it sounds, because latent load matters here as much as temperature.
Equipment that runs longer at lower capacity, meaning two-stage or variable-speed, removes far more moisture than a single-stage system that satisfies the thermostat in short bursts. Correct sizing matters for the same reason: an oversized system cools fast and never runs long enough to dry the air. Continuous fan works against you too, re-evaporating water off a wet coil between cycles.
Beyond the equipment, sealing crawlspaces, insulating attic ducts, and keeping indoor humidity in a reasonable range through the summer are what make the difference long term. A control that reports runtime and humidity, like the ZenFlo thermostat, makes it much easier to see whether your system is actually dehumidifying or just cycling.
What you can do yourself, and what needs a licensed tech
Safe and worth doing:
- Replace the filter with the correct size, and note the date
- Pour a cup of warm water into an accessible drain cleanout to check that it flows
- Look for standing water in the pan and for water stains below the air handler
- Switch the fan from on to auto and see whether the smell improves
- Clear returns of furniture and rugs so the system is not pulling hard through gaps
Leave these to a tech, because they involve electrical components, refrigerant circuits, and chemicals near a live blower:
- Chemical coil cleaning, or pulling a coil to clean it
- Clearing a fully blocked drain under pressure or replacing a rusted pan
- Installing UV equipment, which is wired into the unit
- Duct sealing, liner replacement, and static pressure testing
- Anything behind an electrical panel or involving refrigerant

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a musty AC smell dangerous?
For most people it is unpleasant rather than hazardous, but anyone with asthma or mold sensitivity can react to it, and the moisture causing it can damage building materials. Treat it as something to fix rather than tolerate, and get the source identified rather than covered up.
Why does it only smell for the first minute?
Odor accumulates on damp surfaces while the system is off, then gets swept into the airstream the moment the blower starts. Once the coil is running wet and draining, the concentration drops, so the smell fades even though the source is still there.
Will duct cleaning fix it?
Sometimes, and only if the ducts are genuinely the source. If the coil and pan are the problem, cleaning ducts is money spent in the wrong place. A tech should inspect the coil, pan, drain, and return side before anyone recommends duct work.
Does running the fan constantly help clear the smell?
It usually makes it worse in humid weather. Continuous fan re-evaporates water sitting on the coil and pushes that moisture and odor back into the house. Auto is the better setting through a Georgia summer.
Could the smell mean a refrigerant leak?
No. Refrigerant is essentially odorless, and a musty smell is biological. A sharp chemical or sweet odor, or an electrical burning smell, is different and worth a prompt AC repair call.
